Air charter prices are quoted as an hourly rate and paid as a total, and the gap between those two numbers is where every unpleasant surprise lives. The hourly rate covers the aircraft in the air. Your invoice covers the aircraft in the air, the aircraft flying empty to reach you, the crew, the airports at both ends, and the government.

1. Flight time at the hourly rate
The base line. Billed on actual flight time for the legs you fly, at a rate set by aircraft category. Ask whether the quote uses estimated or actual block time, and what happens if the flight runs long.
2. Repositioning (the line that explains everything)
Aircraft live at a home base. If yours has to fly empty to reach your departure airport and empty home afterward, those hours are in your air charter cost. On a one-hour hop this can exceed the cost of your own flight.
This is why two operators quote the same route hundreds or thousands of dollars apart: one already has metal near you.
3. Daily and trip minimums
Most operators bill a minimum number of hours per day the aircraft is committed to you. A two-day trip with a single 45-minute flight each way will not be billed as 90 minutes.
4. Crew costs on multi-day trips
Overnight per diem, hotel, and — where duty limits bite — a second crew. Ask directly whether your itinerary triggers a crew overnight or a duty-time issue.
5. Taxes and fees

How to compare two air charter prices properly
Line them up on five things, not on the hourly rate:
- All-in total, in writing, for your exact itinerary
- Aircraft type and tail number, plus the certificated operator
- What is excluded — de-icing, catering, overnight parking
- Cancellation window and the refund at each stage
- Substitution terms if the aircraft goes out of service
