How car rental actually works
Plain English, so nothing at the rental counter surprises you.
1. The quote is not the total
The headline daily rate usually excludes local taxes, airport surcharges, extra drivers, child seats, and optional insurance. Read the price breakdown on the supplier's page before you confirm, so you know the full amount.
2. The security deposit (hold)
Most suppliers place a temporary hold on a credit card in the main driver's name at pickup, released after you return the car. Many will not accept a debit card or a card in someone else's name — check that requirement before you fly.
3. Insurance, in one paragraph
Basic cover often comes with a large excess (deductible) — the amount you'd owe if the car is damaged. You can reduce it by buying the supplier's extra cover at the counter, or you may already be covered by your own car insurance or credit card. Confirm your own cover in writing before declining theirs.
4. Fuel and mileage policies
"Full to full" means you return it with the same fuel level you got — the fairest option. Check whether mileage is unlimited, and whether crossing a border or taking a ferry is allowed on your agreement.
5. Licences and driving permits
You'll need your physical driving licence, passport, and the booking confirmation. Many countries also ask for an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence — check your destination's rule before departure, since permits are issued at home, not abroad.
6. Photograph everything at pickup
Walk the car and film a slow lap — bumpers, wheels, windscreen, roof, interior, and fuel gauge — before you drive away, and again at return. That two-minute habit is the single best protection against a damage claim you didn't cause.
