How yacht charter actually works
Plain-English breakdown before you request your first quote.
1. Day charter (the easiest way in)
A 4–8 hour rental of a motor yacht, catamaran, or sailboat with a captain (and sometimes crew) included. Great for Miami, Ibiza, St. Barts, Monaco, Lake Como, and Cabo — you board, cruise, swim, lunch onboard, and return the same day. Typically the fastest path from "curious" to "on the water."
2. Crewed charter (the "yacht week" experience)
A multi-day booking with a professional captain, chef, and deckhand. The base fee covers the boat + crew; a separate Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA — typically 25–35% of base) covers fuel, food, drinks, and dockage. Popular in the Amalfi Coast, French Riviera, Croatia, Greek Islands, BVI, and Bahamas.
3. Bareboat charter
You rent the boat and skipper it yourself. Requires a certified license (ICC, ASA, RYA, or equivalent) that the operator will verify. Cheaper than crewed, but only appropriate if someone in your group is a genuinely qualified skipper.
4. What a real quote includes
Base rental, captain and crew (if crewed), fuel (or APA), taxes and marina fees, and sometimes a cleaning fee. Watersports toys (Seabobs, jet skis, paddleboards) may be extra. Always confirm cancellation policy, weather policy, and whether the price is per-person or per-boat before paying a deposit.
