Every term, in plain English.
The vocabulary of luxury travel, points, and creator income — defined once so no itinerary, contract, or affiliate dashboard reads like a foreign language.
32 terms
- Affiliate link
- A tracked URL that credits you when someone books through it. The traveller pays the same price; the merchant pays you a share of its own margin.
- Affiliate network
- A platform that aggregates many merchant programs behind one account, one dashboard, and one payout. Travelpayouts is the travel-specific example.
- Award availability
- Whether a seat or room can actually be booked with points on your dates. Points without availability are not a booking.
- Bareboat charter
- A yacht rented without crew, where you skipper it yourself. Crewed charters include captain, chef, and service.
- Bib Gourmand
- A Michelin Guide distinction for good cooking at moderate prices — often the best value meal in a starred city.
- Brand pitch
- The email that proposes a partnership: who you are, your dates, what you'll deliver, and what it costs. Short, specific, and sent before you travel.
- Cents per point
- Cash value of a redemption divided by points spent. The standard way to judge whether a redemption is good or wasteful.
- Comped stay
- A hosted stay given in exchange for content. It is a discount, not income — treat it as a trade with a stated value and deliverables.
- Content calendar
- The schedule that turns one trip into weeks of posts: which clip goes where, on which day, with which hook and link.
- Conversion rate
- The share of people who click a link and then complete a booking. Single-digit percentages are normal for high-ticket travel.
- Deep link
- An affiliate link pointing at a specific hotel, flight, or tour page rather than a home page. Deep links convert better because they remove a search step.
- Deliverables
- The exact assets a partnership buys: counts, formats, platforms, usage rights, and deadline. Vague deliverables are how creators end up working for free.
- Elite status
- A loyalty tier that unlocks upgrades, breakfast, late checkout, or lounge access. Often the real reason to concentrate spend in one program.
- Empty leg
- A private jet repositioning flight sold at a discount because it would otherwise fly empty. Cheap, but fixed on route and time.
- EPC
- Earnings per hundred clicks. Useful for comparing two programs: a lower commission rate with far better conversion can out-earn a headline high rate.
- FTC disclosure
- The clear, conspicuous statement required in the US when a link or post could earn you money. It belongs before the link, not buried at the bottom.
- Golden hour
- The hour after sunrise and before sunset. Booking your filming windows around it is the cheapest quality upgrade in travel content.
- Hook
- The first line or first second of a piece of content. It decides whether the rest is seen at all.
- Media kit
- A one- to three-page document with your audience numbers, demographics, sample work, and rates. What a hotel's marketing team asks for before agreeing to anything.
- Michelin star
- An award for cooking quality only, from one to three stars. It rates the food on the plate, not the service, view, or décor.
- Overwater villa
- A guest room built on stilts above a lagoon, reached by boardwalk or boat. Standard in the Maldives, French Polynesia, and parts of the Caribbean.
- Points
- Loyalty currency earned from cards, stays, or flights, redeemable for travel. Value depends entirely on what you redeem for, not the balance.
- Positioning flight
- A cheap extra flight taken to reach the airport where the award seat you want departs from.
- Rack rate
- A hotel's undiscounted published price. Almost nobody informed pays it — consortia rates, card programs, and packages sit below it.
- Rate card
- Your published prices per deliverable — one Reel, a photo set, a stay review. Having one ends the 'what's your budget' loop.
- Shoulder season
- The weeks either side of peak season. Usually the best combination of weather, price, and empty frames for filming.
- Sub-ID
- A tag added to a link so you can see which post, platform, or video produced a booking. The fastest way to learn what your audience actually books.
- Sweet spot
- A specific route or property where the points price is unusually low relative to the cash price.
- Transfer partner
- An airline or hotel program that accepts points moved from a flexible card currency. Transfer partners are usually where outsized value lives.
- UGC
- User-generated content: footage and stills you shoot and license to a brand for its own channels. Paid per package, and it does not require an audience.
- Usage rights
- Permission for a brand to reuse your content, and for how long and where. Paid ads usage should always cost more than organic reposting.
