Wintergreen and Nelson County

Best for: actual privacy, and longer stays.
Bath County and the western highlands
The most remote option: Warm Springs, Hot Springs, and the Allegheny highlands. Mineral springs, no cell coverage in places, and the highest chance of seeing nothing man-made from your deck.
Best for: disconnecting completely.
Five things to verify before you book
- Is the hot tub private or shared? On multi-cabin properties it is sometimes shared, and listings do not always say so.
- When was it last serviced? Ask directly. A hot tub is the amenity most likely to be out of order on arrival.
- Is it screened from neighbors? Photos are shot to hide the cabin twenty yards away. Check a satellite map.
- What is the road like? Steep gravel and switchbacks are common in the Blue Ridge, and some driveways require all-wheel drive in winter. Ask explicitly.
- Is there cell service or Wi-Fi? In Bath County and parts of Nelson, frequently neither. Decide whether that is the feature or the problem.
Timing
- October is peak foliage and the most competitive month of the year — book three to four months ahead.
- Late spring is green, quiet and well priced.
- Winter is the best hot-tub season and the cheapest, but check the road access question above.
