A Miami to Bahamas yacht charter looks simple on a map. Bimini sits about 50 nautical miles east of Miami, close enough that people assume it is a day trip you can book on a whim. The distance is the easy part. The Gulf Stream, customs clearance and the charter contract are what actually decide whether the trip works.
The crossing is a weather decision, not a distance decision
The Gulf Stream runs north between Florida and the Bahamas at two to three knots. When the wind blows from the north against that current, the sea state stacks up into short, steep waves that make a 50-mile run miserable on any size boat.
The rule experienced captains follow: do not cross with any north component in the wind. Wait for east, southeast or south wind under about 15 knots. That window usually appears every few days, which is why serious crossings are booked with flexible dates rather than one fixed morning.
This is also why most Miami operators will not send a small day boat across. Crossings are normally done on boats 40 feet and up with a licensed captain, and many charter contracts specifically exclude international waters unless the crossing was arranged in advance.
What you are actually chartering
Three formats get sold as "Miami to Bahamas":
Day-trip crossing to Bimini. Leaves early, arrives mid-morning, returns the same evening. Long day, tight weather dependency, and the least forgiving if the window closes.
Overnight or multi-day crewed charter. Two to seven nights, usually Bimini, Cat Cay, and on longer trips the Berry Islands or Nassau. This is the format that makes the crossing worthwhile, because you are not burning both good weather windows on transit.
One-way delivery plus a fly-back. The boat repositions and you fly home commercially or privately. Common for owners, occasionally offered to charter guests.
Ask which of the three you are quoting before you compare prices, because a day crossing and a three-night charter are not the same product.
Paperwork, in order
Everyone aboard needs a passport. On arrival in the Bahamas the vessel clears in at a designated port of entry, and the captain handles the cruising permit and immigration cards for the crew and guests. Fees are set by the Bahamian government and are charged per vessel by length, with the current schedule published by Bahamas Customs.
Coming home, the return to the United States is reported to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Small-vessel arrivals are commonly reported through the CBP ROAM app, which lets the captain submit the arrival and the passenger list from the boat. Confirm your captain uses it, because an unreported arrival is the one mistake that turns a charter into a fine.
What it costs, and what the quote leaves out
Crossing charters are quoted as a day rate or a weekly rate plus expenses. The number that catches people out is fuel. A crossing burns significantly more than a bay day, and on most crewed charters fuel is billed at cost on top of the base rate.
Expect these separate lines on a Bahamas quote:
- Fuel for the crossing and inter-island runs
- Captain and crew, plus crew gratuity, customarily 15 to 20 percent of the base
- Bahamian cruising permit and clearance fees
- Marina dockage on the Bahamas side
- Provisioning, and a fishing licence if it is included in the permit tier
- Cancellation and weather-delay terms
Get all six in writing. A quote that is only a base rate is not a quote, it is a headline.
Where the boat actually goes
Bimini is the practical first stop, and for a short charter it is the whole trip. Cat Cay and Gun Cay sit just south with the sandbars and clear-water anchorages most people picture. The Berry Islands are another 60 to 70 miles east and open up on a four-night-plus charter. Nassau, Exuma and the swimming pigs are a different trip entirely and are usually reached by flying in and chartering locally rather than running from Miami.
If your priority is the water rather than the passport stamp, be honest about it. A Biscayne Bay and Haulover sandbar day on the Miami side gets you turquoise water and skyline shots without the crossing risk.
Booking it without getting overcharged
Compare like for like: same boat length, same number of nights, same fuel treatment. Confirm the captain has crossed to the Bahamas before, not just Miami charters. Build in a flexible day on either end for weather. And keep the deposit terms tied to the weather clause, so a genuine no-go window is not treated as your cancellation.
